Today’s card: Job’s Wife

Her story: Uh, her story? It’s practically nonexistent . . . and only assumed based on that of her husband. You’ve heard of him, yes? God asks Satan for his opinion on Job’s piety and Satan accuses Job of only being pious because God has materially blessed him and says, “If you were to take everything away from him, then surely he will curse you.” Just so you know, he never does, despite all that he loses . . . which is a lot! His wife however, has a different take on all of it and at one point says to him, “Why don’t you just curse God and die?!”

As you might expect, she’s not been held up as an example to follow. As you also might expect, I completely disagree with such.

I love that she sees that everything that happens in her husbands live (and therefore hers, as well) as completely unacceptable and horribly unfair. Job continues to articulate his faithfulness to the divine, but she says exactly what she thinks . . . even and especially about the divine. And despite all we might have been led to believe about saying such a thing, she is not struck by lightning or “smote” in any way. She survives. As does her husband.

The book of Job is a conundrum, to be sure. It asks the existential question of why the righteous suffer. And though it’s never answered (which confounds us even more), Job’s wife pulls no punches. She is not afraid to speak her mind. And, perhaps most importantly, no repercussions result for her honesty or her beliefs (even lack thereof).

Every bit of this feels significant to acknowledge. She feels significant to acknowledge!

Her wisdom and voice on your behalf:
