Today's Card from The Sacred Muse Deck
A woman, her story, and so much wisdom and inspiration - for you!
Today’s card: Delilah
Her story: Here’s the common version . . . the one we most-often associate with her.
[Delilah] was bribed to entrap Samson. After three attempts to trick him, she finally coaxed him into revealing that the secret of his strength was his long hair, whereupon she took advantage of his confidence to betray him to his enemies. Her name has since become synonymous with a voluptuous, treacherous woman. (Brittanica.com)
Before I go one step further, where in the world did “voluptuous” come from in this story and text? Good god. This is so problematic. And though I am choosing to not take this on in this moment, you can, I’m sure, imagine just how much this bothers me!
OK. Back to what I do want to focus on . . .
Too often we are told a story like Delilah’s as a template for what not to do. (Much like Eve’s, of course. Enough! I am far more interested in and committed to discovering and honoring what her story invites and compels in us, what she longs for us to understand, what wisdom and encouragement she has been waiting to offer all this time. We would do well to wonder how she would tell her own story.
